And I am honored that she was a guest on this podcast. I'm really excited for you to hear her story and her wisdom. And please stay until the end and leave a comment. I want to know how this landed for you. I want to know what this awoke for you. I want to know if this connected you to that wisdom within you to help you lead your children and lead your life from an inspired, empowered, authentic, confident place. Okay, let's get started. I'm so, so grateful to have you here. It was so fun to be on your podcast. So welcome, welcome, Brooke. I'm so glad you're here. Thank you for having me. Absolutely. I'm really excited for this conversation because being on your podcast was such an inspiration and truly connects so deeply to the awakening that I want people to have so deeply and so desperately. And you are so beautifully guiding women in your work. And so I would love to talk about that before we dive in. I'll share with the audience a little bit about who you are. This is Brooke Harmer. Brooke is a certified perinatal nutritionist and women's health coach who is passionate about helping women feel strong and nourished and supported throughout pregnancy, postpartum, and motherhood as an army wife and mom of two. She understands firsthand the challenges and beauty that come with this season of life. Through holistic nutrition, lifestyle guidance and education, Brooke helps moms build sustainable habits that support their health and their families. She is also the host of a top 20 wellness podcast for moms, where she shares practical tips, conversations, and encouragement for navigating motherhood with confidence. Her mission is simple help women not just survive motherhood, but truly thrive in it. Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes. All the things I am a woman, I am a mother, I am all of that. And I adore and love and appreciate the work that you're doing. And I would love for you to share how do you do all that? I mean, how do you help women thrive in the season of motherhood? Because that is a challenging one for sure.
SPEAKER_01It is challenging. It's definitely been something that I have had to work through on my own. And what I share with other women has come not only from clinical experience, but from personal experience.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I get questions a lot from moms where they're like, hey, does this actually work? Like I'm I'm working mom and I've got little kids, my babies aren't sleeping through the night. Like, I don't know if this is gonna fit for me. And I'm like, no, what I teach works because I'm doing it myself. If it fits in my schedule, I know it can fit in your schedule. So it's been a journey getting here. But the reason I feel so passionate about what I do is because when I learned to not only listen to my body, but to understand what actually is good for my body, it changed how I experienced motherhood. For a long time, I felt like motherhood and mothering was happening to me. And I was just kind of at the mercy of my kids' emotions and whether or not they were sleeping and whether or not they were potty trained, and all of these other things that felt out of my control at the time. Um, and so it felt like I was just always trying to keep up and just like floating by. And I didn't like that feeling. I didn't like like I recognize that there are some things in our life that we can't control. That's not what I'm saying. But I didn't like that feeling that things were happening to me. I wanted to.
SPEAKER_00What did it feel like? Yeah, no, totally. What did that feel like in your body?
SPEAKER_01It it felt resentful. Like I remember feeling really resentful towards the life that I had chosen to have little kids, to be at home, to be in the grind of changing diapers and breastfeeding and making the same five foods every day and cleaning up toys and all of those mundane things, repetitive things. I remember feeling resentful that that was the life that I was living. I was like, I have so much energy and so much passion and so much love and so much drive. And here I am stuck in this blah blah blah routine. Yeah, I didn't like feeling resentful because in turn I started pointing the finger at my kids and being like, it's your fault that I feel the way that I do. It's your fault that I don't like how I feel. And that didn't sit well with me.
SPEAKER_00Wow. Okay, first of all, how courageous for you to just say that because I think a lot of women feel that way and would would not say it because it's the wrong thing to say, because the parents or the society, whatever people are gonna judge me. So kudos to you for like just stepping into that. I I'm just quickly thinking about when I had my son, you're reminding me, he was like, you know, a week old. And I remember sitting there going, Holy shit, like, what did I just do? And how do I like live? And then my sister-in-law said to me, When in doubt, get out. And I was like, damn, okay. So I got up and I went out. And like that, I always lived like that, like get up and move and go out if you're feeling like a certain way. But anyway, back to you. I I just love that. How did you get to that level of confidence to just say it and claim the truth of your experience?
SPEAKER_01I was tired of being a victim. I was tired of waiting for somebody to come rescue me. I was tired of waiting for somebody to notice the pity party that I was throwing myself and be like, oh, I see you, you poor thing. You don't have to feel that way. Like I was, I was again, I was waiting for life to happen to me. I was waiting for someone else to come snap me out of it. I was waiting for someone to either um confirm how I was feeling like, of course, you feel the way that you do. That's totally normal. That's just how it is. Yeah. Or I was waiting for somebody to come and say, girl, snap out of it. I didn't really care. I just wanted someone else to take responsibility. I wanted someone else to do the hard work. And I just had this little moment one day where I was like, that's my job. It's my job to do the hard work. It's my job to determine the feeling that's in our home and how I show up for my kids and how I feel about being a mom. I'm the only person that gets to control that. And I always like being in troll. So I'm like, actually, I don't want anybody else in control. I don't want to wait for someone else to come in and do it because then it's gonna be their way. And I don't want it to be their way. I want it to be my way. So I just, yeah, I just kind of had this light bulb moment where I was like, no, this is my reality. This is my experience, this is my choice, and I don't like it, and I'm gonna change it.
SPEAKER_00Okay. I love that so much. Talk to me about that light bulb moment. Like, what was that really for you? Because this podcast is about awakening that inner light bulb for people. It is about helping people connect to that voice, connect to that wisdom, connect to that intelligence so that they can A, know it's there, and then B, learn to listen to it, trust it, and be led by it. So I'm curious, how did it show up for you? And then how did you have the strength or the confidence to be led by it and trust it?
SPEAKER_01Oh, that is a great question. Um, I feel like it wasn't just one light bulb moment. I will say that I've gone through these phases where, you know, I kind of slip back into being resentful and I'm just kind of going through the motions of life. So I don't want to, I don't want to frame this as, oh, like I had my moment and now I'm fixed permanently. Like this is I continue to have these moments. But in those times when I do have these light bulb moments where I'm like, oh, that's right. This is how I want it to be, this is what I need it to do. Um, for me, a lot of that is very, very spiritual. I am always asking God to be a part of my life, to speak to me, to speak life over my family, to help me hear his wisdom and see, not necessarily see what he sees because he knows so much more than we do, but find his perspective and then align with that and like realign myself to the kind of woman, the kind of wife, the kind of mom that God wants me to be, um, and really tap into that. So a lot of it is spiritual and really asking God to be a part of my life and talk to me and give me that harsh talking to that I need, but also in a very loving way, so that I actually want to change. And then I do think part of it was also just almost like a desperate reach for something where I was like, okay, I feel very out of control right now. I'm gonna reach for anything that I can control. What can I control? I can control what time I wake up in the morning, I can control what I put in my body, I can control how I speak. And when I realized it really did come down to those little things that just accumulate over the day, I was like, okay, I have a lot more control than I previously thought. And I just need to be more intentional about those areas of my life. So yeah, I think the the biggest light bulb moment was hearing God's voice and recognizing, okay, yeah, like you're right. I see what you're trying to tell me. And then being an agent unto myself and saying, okay, so what am I gonna do now that I have this enlightenment and how am I gonna show up with this new knowledge and presence?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yes, I love that. Can you talk to us a little bit about the relationship to God? You know, not without getting uh, because I know it's more spiritual, but I think like a lot of people want that wisdom, want that connection, want that understanding. And it's like, how do I hear it? And what does that sound like? And do you really hear a voice? Do you feel it in your body? You know, so can you talk to us a little bit about that? I love this question.
SPEAKER_01And I'm sure for the listeners, no matter what religion you identify with or what greater power you're connecting to, I feel like it could be a little bit different for everyone. For me, I'm a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and I have grown up learning that anything good comes from God. And so if the feelings or the thoughts that I'm having are encouraging me to be better, encouraging me to serve, encouraging me to love, to be humble, to be faithful, um, anything like that, that comes from God. And so instead of playing this game of, is this from God? Is this my own thought? I ask myself, is this good? And if it's good, it comes from God, and I'm gonna move in that direction. And eventually I will have more clarity. But for right now, I just need to distinguish what's good, what doesn't align with my values and move in the direction that I want to go. And then as we start to get more specific, it's like, okay, how is God speaking to me? I believe that God speaks differently to everybody. Um, I believe that prayer is a way for us to talk to God. And I believe that the scriptures are how God speaks to us. So I will open my Bible, I will open my Book of Mormon, and I will really try and read God's word and see what stands out, right? Like, oh my gosh, what do I want to underline? What do I want to highlight? Like what stands out to me? That's God speaking to me. I've also found that God really, really gets to me through music. And so if I'm ever desperate to hear God's voice and to have his direction, I will turn on my worship music and I will just put on my noise-canceling headphones and go sit in the corner by the sunshine and close my eyes and just listen to the music and pay attention to the thoughts that are coming into my mind and how I feel. Do I feel my body relaxing? Do I feel my body becoming full of energy? Do I feel motivated to do something? Um, do I suddenly have a spark of, oh my gosh, I never thought to try it this way? Like just really creating space for the goodness of God to come into my life and then just take it and run with it.
SPEAKER_00Oh I mean so beautiful, just so beautiful on so many levels. Number one, I want to say this is why I think I love this podcast platform so much, because I get this incredible opportunity to meet people, all kinds of people, and find out how they connect to that inner wisdom, how they connect to that voice within. What is that relationship? What does that look like? And your pathway is so beautiful and so pure, I feel. And it's just really gorgeous. So thank you for sharing that. I just think the relationship that you have to all of that is really um so, so just magical is kind of what's coming to you. So thank you for sharing that. Um, and the other thing that's really struck me was I find it very empowering because yes, you're reading scripture, yes, you're asking God, but at the end of the day, you're choosing. You're choosing by deciding what is good. And and to me, when we say what is good, how we answer that question is to feel in our body, if our body resonates within your, you know, how you connect to God's words or the scripture's words, right? If you connect, you feel you know you connect because your body tells you. Am I right about that? Does that feel accurate?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, body and mind. Um, but I would say more so, yeah, when you can step away from logical thinking, yes, you're relying on how you feel. Do you feel warm? Do you feel full of light? Do you feel full of energy? Do you feel at peace? Yes.
SPEAKER_00Yes. And that's the guidance. So replace God with boyfriend, with job, with friendships, with am I gonna move? Like whatever the thing is that we're connected to. It's it's like we connect back. How does it feel in your body? And I just love your frame around like, is it good? Period. That's the question. And how do we get to good? We feel in our body, and our body says yes, or our body says no, and we know that by the sensations that show up. I love that so much. How has your journey, your awakening, your connection, I should say, to this spiritual practice that you have? And by the way, I love the music thing because I'm a big music person too. And like I really felt so emotional when you said that that you put on your music and you just sit with the sun. I mean, just I so I so relate because I do the same. Um, and it's a great tool for the listeners. Like, if you don't know how to connect, put on some great, inspiring, beautiful music. In your case, worship music, you said. So, like, throw some of that on, see what happens, see how it feels in your body. Um, how has this awakening and this understanding, this connection helped your work?
SPEAKER_01Oh, I feel like it's or informed, I should say.
SPEAKER_00Informed your work. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01That's a great question. I feel like it's given me more intention and more purpose. I feel like in the space that I'm in, I'm in the health, nutrition, wellness space. It's so easy to get caught up in all the biohacks and all the tips and all the tricks and you know, counting the macros and like all of these really nitty-gritty details.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01That sometimes we make our health more about am I checking the box instead of how we feel. I experienced this myself about what is it, six years ago now, when I was drowning in an eating disorder and also trying to get pregnant at the same time. I was watching what I ate and I was exercising, and I was trying not to sit all day long, and I was trying to keep myself busy with work and with friends. And it became so ritualistic of just checking these boxes that I was not actually paying attention to how I felt through all of that. I was bloated, I was constipated, I lost my period. I was freezing in anything less than 80 degrees Fahrenheit, whether it was inside or outside. Like I needed a jacket if it was lower than 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Um, my gas was so bad that like we would have to open all the windows in our house to like air out the house. Like all of these little signs were my body trying to tell me I don't feel good. I was hungry when I went to bed at night. I couldn't sleep, I couldn't think, I couldn't regulate my emotions. Like on paper, I was checking all the boxes. Right. But when I took a step back and I had one of those light bulb moments when I had a friend who was so courageous to be very honest and say, I'm noticing these behaviors. I'm worried about you. Are you okay? And like really create that environment for me to have that light bulb moment. I was like, actually, I'm not okay. I don't feel good. I don't like how I feel. I don't like that it's six months into my trying to conceive journey and we're coming up with nothing. I don't like how how I carry on throughout my day. Like I'm so stressed about every bite that I put in my mouth. And it made me realize I was like, that's what health is. It's about how you feel. And you know, you could spend this kind of in the body positivity of, well, if I'm 350 pounds, but I feel great, then that's fine. That's not what I'm saying. Um, that's like a different can of worms. But this idea that if we try and condense our health and our motherhood experience to checking boxes rather than how we feel as we go through our day, as we go throughout this journey, then we're missing the whole point. And I don't want moms to fall into the same trap I did, where they're like, gosh, like I'm checking all the boxes and I still feel like crap, and then not know what to do about it. Um, I want to help bridge that gap so I can say, hey, this is where you are now, and everyone has to start somewhere. Let me show you a better way and let me teach you how to work with your body, not make your body work for you.
SPEAKER_00I want to talk about that and how you do that, but first I want to acknowledge your story. And again, your level of vulnerability is such an example. And I know you talk about this on your platform and your podcasts and your socials and everything, but I am deeply grateful for you to share that here because someone is going to listen and say, Oh my God, me too. I I'm there or I was there, and then follow your example. So, what an incredible journey you have had. And I'm curious about the moment with your friend when she was courageous enough to ask you or to say, I'm seeing some things here that isn't great. And so And I know that that all came from love. And I'm curious, how did that feel? A. And B, were you, was there any hesitation where you were like, I am not revealing this? Or was it like an all-in because you needed help?
SPEAKER_01That's a really great question. I am so grateful that my friend was A, courageous enough to say something, and B waited for, I don't want to say the right time, but a good time. Um, you know, being able to kind of read the room and understand what was going on. Funny enough, this friend was actually a guy. Um, my husband and I are best friends when we lived in Utah. Um, we did everything together. And um my best friend and her husband and I were all training for a half marathon. And we had already reached the halfway point, and uh my friend Lindsay decided that she was done. She was in too much pain. So it was just her husband and I that were finishing the our our own little race together. And as we were running back, that's just when he very casually started asking questions. Um, he was telling a story. He goes, Did I ever tell you about my ex-wife? And I said, No. I knew that you were married before, but I haven't heard anything about your ex-wife. And he goes on to tell me how she had also struggled with anorexia, but she decided that she would rather stay in that life and ruin everything else than heal and recover and get out of it. And that's one of the reasons that they ended up getting a divorce. And I was like, wow, oh my goodness, you know, thank you so much for being willing to share that with me. That's an incredible story, and I'm sure that that's been really, really hard for you and like all those things. And then he very softly turned to me and he's like, I'm starting to see the same things in you.
SPEAKER_00Oh my God, I have chills.
SPEAKER_01And because Lindsay and I love you, and we love you and your husband, we have been worried for you, and we don't want you to go down the same route that my ex-wife did. We don't want to see your marriage fall apart. We don't want to see you physically fall apart. We love you, and we want you to know that we are not ashamed of you. We are not judgmental. We are here to help in any way that we can. But in order to do that, we have to tell you what we're seeing. And in that moment, mind you, I'm running a half marathon. So, like, yeah, you know, this is like trying to process while you're huffing and puffing and like dying. Right. Um I remember just like, I remember feeling so seen and feeling so relieved that someone finally said what I was too afraid to say. I feel like deep down inside, I knew that I was sick physically and mentally. I believe that anorexia is also very much a mental disorder. I don't think it's just physical. And I remember like kind of thinking that I was sick, but I was too scared to admit it. I was too scared to say something. I was too scared to ask for help. And so when my friends said something to me, I was like, oh my gosh, someone, someone sees me. Someone sees past this facade that I'm trying to put up. And I don't have to be afraid anymore. I don't have to be alone anymore. Like, I feel like I can actually breathe now. And bonus, they know what it's like to struggle with an eating disorder. So it's not just someone seeing me, it's someone seeing me and knowing me. So I was just so grateful. And that day was the day that I actually truly began my road to recovery. And that's really when the rest of my life pivoted, and I am where I am now. Three kids later. I forgot to update my bio, by the way. I'm a mom of three. Um, right. Three kids later, seven years of marriage happier than I've ever been.
SPEAKER_00Um does this friend know how pivotal they were in your life?
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Okay, good. Um, and like what a beautiful, there's so many layers to that story. A what can happen when one feels seen and heard and validated? It's not hard to do for someone and look at what happened. Your whole life changed. You pivoted and you're happy, and you have three children, and you're married seven years, and you're thriving. And wow. So for the listeners, really, it's like if you are someone that sees a friend in need like this, but to be creative the way your friend was, so beautifully sensitive and compassionate and thoughtful to present it in the way that he did. So there's that, which is which is like art, you know, it's really it requires this level of just real sensitivity to the situation. So I love that. And I love that you were in the right place at the right time and you heard it and you felt the way you did, and what a powerful shift. There's so much in that that's very, very empowering. So you make that turn, you've got this life, you have these children. And now, would you say, would it be fair to say that your life has really kind of it's has been a collection of lessons through your own life experience to now go make the impact that you're having for these women? Oh, absolutely.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, absolutely. I am such a firm believer that everything we go through, whether it's positive, negative, easy, hard, good, bad, it's all meant for us to serve and help others because we're all human. We all only have one life. We're all living life for the first time. We're all trying to figure it out. We're all trying to be as successful as we can be. We're also trying to be the best versions of ourselves that we can be. And how amazing is it that God has created life in such a way that we are able to support others on their journey. Whether that's, you know, being outspoken and being involved in every detail, or, you know, just being an example of someone watching you, never actually getting to talk to you, but they've watched you walk down the street 500 times since you've been neighbors, and just seeing you and how you interact with your children and how you pick up the mail and how you greet your husband from work and never actually have a conversation with you, that can also positively impact someone's life. So absolutely, yeah. I think I would say everything has been a way for me to turn around and pass it forward. Beautiful. Pass it forward, pass it forward.
SPEAKER_00I must pass it forward, pay it forward, hand it forward. Um, I love all that. Dance it forward. Um, so now you spoke about how you do that, really helping women see that light, have those light, bold moments, and listen and create the life that they desire and help them strengthen their confidence. So I'm curious. We have a few more minutes. I would love for you to share. You know, what are some of the approaches that you take with women and what would you share with a woman listening now in that kind of state, where you were, to make that bridge, to walk over the bridge to get to where you hope your clients get to?
SPEAKER_01Um, the first thing that comes to mind today is making sure that you are actually eating three meals a day. And I know that that sounds crazy, but I speak from experience and also working with hundreds of mamas, that it is so easy for us to just wake up and start our day with a cup of coffee and then somehow forget to throw food in there because we're doing school drop-off and we're running to our Pilates, and then we're going to the grocery store and blah blah blah. And then lunchtime hits, and you're like, wow, I don't feel good. I should probably eat something. So you grab a salad that's like 200 calories with fat-free dressing because you want to watch your figure and you don't want to overeat. And so by now it's two o'clock in the afternoon, and all you've had is a cup of coffee and a tiny salad with no protein and no calories, and you're wondering why you're so exhausted. And then you're like, oh yeah, my kids have like one and a half chicken nuggets on their plate from lunch, and then this one only ate half their sandwich. So I'll just grab whatever's on their plate and we'll just roll with it, and I'll just eat a really good dinner. I see so many moms falling into this trap where they wonder why they're exhausted and emotionally dysregulated, and why their mood can change on a dime, and they don't want to have sex with their partner, and they can't go outside without sunglasses on, and they aren't seeing their weight budge no matter how much they try. And then I take a look and I'm like, honey, we gotta eat three meals a day, and they have to have protein, right? They have to have calories, right? And I know that that sounds so simple, but I'm saying it because this is the pattern that I see. So I'd see one of the biggest things that can really help you walk over that bridge and step into a place where you actually feel in control of your motherhood experience, yeah, is just eating enough food. You'd be so surprised at how easy it is to actually enjoy being a mom when you've got a full belly. Yeah, yeah, not an overstuffed, I ate my weight in french fries kind of a thing. Not that, yeah, yes, a full belly that has what it needs to do what you want it to do.
SPEAKER_00I love that. And it's making me think to the connection, right? That nourishment perspective is huge. Eating nutritional foods, having your meals every meal a day, whatever your meal structure is, and how that I would imagine for you and your experience directly connected to how you could connect to your spiritual practice. Because that wiz, we have to, in order to hear that guidance, that wisdom, that God, that voice, that spirit, that source, we have to have that nutrition inside of ourselves so our bodies can feel strong and calm. Would you would you agree with that?
SPEAKER_01Oh, absolutely. Your nervous system is regulated by your diet. Yeah. Not only by your diet, but a large portion of your nervous system regulation comes from how you feed your body and whether or not you feed your body. So if you want to be more in tune with God, if you want to be more in tune with whatever you connect to spiritually, you have to be nourishing your body. So your nervous system is in a place to not only hear, but to also receive.
SPEAKER_00Exactly. And then from there, right, when we are balanced in that way, we can guide our children from a much stronger, more confident place.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. You're so panicked if your kid doesn't finish their plate of chicken, nuggets, and goldfish, and here you are eating nothing. So give yourself that same grace and hold yourself to that same standard of if I'm worried about how much my kid is eating, I should be worried about how much I'm eating too. And I should always err on the side of more.
SPEAKER_00Absolutely. And again, connecting that to a larger picture. Yes, your health, right? So you, your example is just unbelievable. Like what happens when we don't take care of our bodies from a nutritional standpoint, and what take what takes place in our body from a spiritual perspective or a guidance perspective, which which directly impacts how we parent our children and the guidance that we give them. So, A, it sounds like what you're saying, right? We have to be the example for them. We need to be eating well if they're gonna eat well, and we need to be content in our bodies and calm our nervous system in order to parent with clarity and confidence, right? To show them the way. Yeah. Amen. Amen, sister. Oh my God. Okay, we're gonna wrap up. I am so grateful to you for sharing your story the way you did and sharing some entry points into what a healthy life looks like for all of these mamas out there. So if people want more, which I am sure they do, how do they connect with you?

Um, and I have tons of freebies to get you started if that's where you're at in your journey. And if you're looking for something more where you're like, hey, like I need really, really specific guidance. I need you to hold my hand. I need you to show me with lab work and blood work, like why I feel the way that I do and what I need to do to bridge that gap. I would love to work with you one-on-one. Um, I currently have some spots available for one-on-one clients. So if that is more the direction you're going, I would love to chat with you.
SPEAKER_00Yes, I love it. Your work is so incredibly important. It is the way forward. It is the way to success because we got to be whole first before we can go out to the world, including our children, and do what it is we're meant to do. So I thank you. I thank you, I thank you. All right, listeners, we will see you next week on the Wisdom from Within podcast, where human stories awaken leadership from within. See you next week. Thanks so much. If something in this conversation spoke to you, don't keep it to yourself. Send it to someone who might need that message too. You can also send me a comment because I would love to know what it is that landed for you. But most importantly, take a moment to pause and listen to what it is that resonated because that's where your real guidance system lives. The one you can trust, the one you can rely on. See you next week.
